Too Many Passions?
February 12th, 2009 by paddlenewyorkLast weekend, during an unseasonably warm day, I was faced with a dilemma I am sure most of us have had to deal with before. With only a few hours free, should I go for a long run, hit the trails on my mountain bike, or take advantage of the melting ice and hit the water in my sea kayak? Such a decision is always hard to make. I truly love my mountain bike. But, running clears my head like no other activity. Then again, I am always drawn to the water. Is it possible to have too many passions in life? Nah…
My solution was to hook up the bike trailer to my mountain bike and take my daughter to the beach. Talk about a win-win situation…
I could spend time with her (always one of my favorite things to do), get a ride in, and check on the water conditions. Then, after an hour or two of collecting shells and pebbles and playing tag,
we rode home where I exchanged my bike shoes and helmet for my life jacket and paddle. The previously warm temp’s had dropped a bit by this point, and the wind had picked up a bit since our ride. But, the paddle was still worth it (as most usually are). I headed to a local spot that has what I consider the most beautiful view on Long Island, walked around a bit and snapped a few pictures, and made it home in time for a well-earned dinner with my beloved family.
It really isn’t a bad thing to have too many passions.
