Eating close to home

Health-conscious Organic food, in its environmentally-conscious recycled packaging, has been on grocery store shelves for well over a decade. One could even argue that organic food has gone ‘mainstream’. But that’s part of the problem… the stream of weekly 18-wheelers, hauling these cartons of better-for-you food to your grocery store. So what’s the next step in helping make the world a little better, a little healthier and a little greener? How about buying local?

Here is a GREAT site to help you find a ‘farmer’s market’ or local produce stand in your area. We’re fortunate, in Birmingham, AL, to have no less than five wondeful weekend farmer’s markets, during the warmer months. Though the same sellers are there every week, the selections do change. So our menus get altered a little based on what we can and cannot find.

But be warned, your outlook on food, community and health can be drastically changed by digging into a salad or cassarole or goat cheese spread and knowing that it was made ‘just over yonder’.

Let us know what you find helpful when trying to shop local.
