Publishing books and maps about nature and outdoor adventures, we get to see A LOT of beautiful photographs. It’s one of the perks of working here. Almost every photo that comes across our screens would make a nice wallpaper background… but every once in a while we get hold of some images that just makes everyone stop and take a look. That’s exactly what we have with our upcoming Exploring Havasupai book.

I honestly cannot describe how beautiful these images are running alongside author Greg Witt’s words. This small lavish corner of the Grand Canyon almost sounds magical. You can check it out yourself when the book releases this Fall.

Over Father’s Day weekend, my fiance & I spent the weekend at Lake Martin with his family.

Lake Martin is located in the central part of the state of Alabama (U.S.) in the counties of Tallapoosa, Elmore, and Coosa. It is a 39,180 acre lake with 743 miles (1,200 km) of wooded shoreline.

Lake Martin is well known for its recreational activites of swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, camping, golfing and…..jumping off the cliffs of the infamous “Chimney Rock”!

On June 12, 2008, to commencerate Father’s Day, my fiance, his brother-inlaw and 62 yr. old father climbed the steep and slippery jagged side of Chimney Rock all the way to the 62 foot highest cliff……and one by one jumped! I was nervous at first for their safety, precautions need to be taken with such a jump, but then overwhelmed with life’s great adventures and being witness to such a cool father and son event. Check out the pictures of Keith, Shawn and Fred jumping the infamous Chimney Rock!

P.S. I jumped the 40 ft. cliff, but no pictures…..I promise I did it though!:)

After nearly 10 years as Senior Editor for COASTAL LIVING Magazine, covering the shores of North America, Susan Haynes has expanded her geography to embrace the river, forest, and mountain terrain of Menasha Ridge Press. As Senior Acquisitions Editor, Susan is hot on the trail for great ideas, authors, and manuscripts for our outdoor adventure books. Prior to her obsession with nature and the wilderness, Susan wrote and edited her way through the asphalt jungles of Chicago and San Francisco. She can now walk to work from her home in Birmingham, Alabama, which she shares with a tame husband and two wild felines.

Welcome Susan!

This past weekend we loaded up the VW and headed to Montgomery to participate in this year’s Alabama Book Festival. The weather was perfect as was our location.

All of which were made that much better by getting to spend time speaking with readers and users of our books. With our long list of fun authors, gorgeous travel photos of beautiful subject matter, it is always a blast putting our books together, but there is nothing like sitting outside, on a sunny southern Saturday, sharing tales of the trail and outdoor adventures.

Our best selling titles this Festival were our popular 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Birmingham and A Canoe and Kayaking: Georgia.Lots of people would come by, already owning one of our guide books looking to see what else we had available for their state. That gives you a warm feeling, on par with the sun that day, to know that people have used your books and enjoyed themselves enough to search you out to see what else there is to do!It was a great day and we’re excited for the future of the Alabama Book Festival! We have a few photos after the jump… (more…)
