Mount Mansfield, Not Just Another Pretty Face

Mount Mansfield, elevation 4,392 feet, is the highest and most frequently climbed peak in Vermont.  Viewed from the east or west, its distinctive alpine summit ridge seems to have the profile of a human face.  Therefore, several locations are named for facial features, including the nose, lips, forehead, Adam’s apple, and chin, which is the highpoint.  Located near Lake Champlain and the college town of Burlington in the northwestern corner of the state, the barren summit provides spectacular 360-degree views of the Adirondacks of New York, Lake Champlain, and the Green Mountains of Vermont.  One of our most enjoyable hikes on Mansfield was during Thanksgiving Weekend a few years ago.  A thin layer of ice and snow necessitated attaching Stabilicers to our hiking boots for additional traction.  A calm, exceptionally clear day, we were able to see Mount Washington in White Mountains of New Hampshire and Mount Marcy in upstate New York.  Several trails lead to the summit of this popular mountain. Our book, Mountains for Mortals - New England, provides hikers with explicit directions to what we believe is the easiest and most scenic route to the top.  Use our comprehensive trail description to navigate to the Chin, which is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.  After your hike, enjoy excellent shopping opportunites and a variety of fine eateries in nearby Burlington.  Our website, www.ronchaseoutdoors.com, offers information on many other outdoor adventures in New England and beyond.
