Mount Tom, Rhode Island - An Easy Escape Hike near New England Cities
Just a short ride from Boston, Hartford and Providence, a hike on Mount Tom is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the cities. With an elevation gain of only 294 feet, it is an easy tramp through a hardwood and conifer forest with minimal rock and ledge scrambling. One section of trail navigates over a gentle ridge called Mount Tom Cliffs, offering excellent views of the surrounding area, particularly during late fall and winter after the autumn leaves have fallen. Enjoy a leisurely rest and lunch break at the site of three stone slab chairs near the cliffs. Take your GPS and see if you can determine the exact location of the unmarked high point. Situated in the 14,000 acre Arcadia Wildlife Management Area in western Rhode Island, this approximately 3 hour trek can be completed as either an out-and-back or loop hike. Our book, Mountains for Mortals - New England, provides precise directions to the trailhead and the GPS coordinates. Use our detailed trail description to navigate the circuitous route.
