Mount Madison - a Presidential Experience
Mount Madison, the fifth-highest peak in New England, is a premiere fall hike. Located in upstate New Hampshire a few miles west of the Town of Gorham, the Madison summit cone offers some of the most magnificent mountain views in northeastern United States. Named for the fourth president, it is part of the Presidential Range, which includes the five highest peaks in the northeast. The range is famous for its towering summits, deep ravines, precipitous headwalls, alpine environment and notoriously mercurial weather. The AMC Madison Spring Hut is situated in a col at the foot of the summit cone. Fall is my favorite time of year for a hike to the top of Mount Madison. The air is crisp and cool, views phenomenal and trails are generally snow free, although I advise carrying stableicers or similar footgear.
