Camel’s Hump, a Distinctive Vermont Summit
One of only two alpine zones in Vermont, Camel’s Hump is perhaps the most distinctive landmark in the Green Mountains. The barren summit area provides splendid 360-degree views of the Green Mountains and Adirondacks of northeastern New York. Much of massive Lake Champlain is visible on clear days. Although the 272 mile Vermont Long Trail traverses the summit from south to north, alternative side trails make Camel’s Hump one of the easiest 4,000 footer hikes in New England. Formerly called Le Lion Couchant (the Crouching Lion), then Camel’s Rump, it was politely renamed Camel’s Hump in the 19th Century. Our book, Mountains for Mortals - New England, provides GPS Trailhead coordinates to the easiest trail to the summit, precise directions, detailed trail description, map, elevation profile and photos.
