Bigelow Mountain - A Best Maine Hike
My recent Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society (PPCS) trip on Bigelow Mountain was a great reminder of what outstanding hiking trails it provides. Located in Carrabassett Valley in western Maine, our group spent a wonderful, brisk fall day enjoying one of the best alpine environments in New England. The summits and ridge provided phenomenal views of Flagstaff Lake and the surrounding mountains. Bigelow Preserve consists of over 36,000 acres with seven summits, including three of New England’s One Hundred Highest Peaks. The Appalachian Trail traverses the entire range and the trails are in great condition. For more information on our adventure, see the trip report posted on the PPCS website, www.paddleandchowder.org. To obtain precise directions to the trailhead, a comprehensive trail description and trail map, refer to our book, Mountains for Mortals - New England. Information on more interesting outdoor adventures is available on our website, www.ronchaseoutdoors.com.
