Hiking the peaks of Baxter State Park in Maine
Baxter State Park in northern Maine is a hiking paradise. Mount Katahdin, Maine’s most fabled and highest mountain, is the crown jewel of this spectacular wilderness preserve. Legendary Katahdin is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Mountain Trail and possesses three spectacular peaks: Pamola, Hamlin and mile-high Baxter. However, Baxter Park also includes 45 additional peaks and more than 200,000 acres of wilderness. I love hiking in Baxter anytime of year (there are periods each year when the park is closed). My favorite season is the winter. I’ve enjoyed 18 winter expeditions into the park, including 15 that I’ve led or co-led. For detailed information on hikes to the summits of Baxter and Hamlin Peaks and North Traveler Mountain, reference our book, Mountains for Mortals - New England, which includes directions, trail descriptions, photos, maps and elevation profiles.
