Wilderness Press Authors at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market
Earlier this month, Wilderness Press and Menasha Ridge Press went to Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City. We always enjoy walking around and seeing all the newest gear for the upcoming season. But one of our favorite parts of the show is getting to spend time with our authors, hearing their stories from the trails, and helping showcase their books.
This summer, we had Matt Nelson who wrote Your Complete Guide to the Arizona National Scenic Trail, and Rick Deutsch, author of One Best Hike: Yosemite’s Half Dome.
Matt Nelson is an enthusiastic outdoorsman who has pretty much done it all—he’s worked as an outdoor educator, backpacking guide, archeologist, editor, and freelance journalist. And as the current executive director of the Arizona Trail Association, you can really say that he knows his stuff. If you’ve never heard of or considered hiking the 800-mile AZT, maybe Matt’s description will convince you:
Arizona evokes images of breathtaking landscapes, exotic animals, star-filled skies, and dramatic sunsets. Even for those who have never traveled through this wild part of the West, the very concept of the place suggests mystery, beauty, and allure. Glancing at a map of the state reveals an abundance of national forests, national parks, Native American Reservations, and huge tracts of land free of roads, cities, or any other semipermanent footprint of modern society. From rolling grasslands and lush Sonoran Desert to alpine peaks and one of the world’s deepest canyons, it is a land of biodiversity unlike anywhere else on Earth. This is Arizona.
And through its wild heart runs a single trail—an 800-plus mile path from Mexico to Utah that links mountains, deserts, forests, canyons, rivers, communities, and people. This is the Arizona National Scenic Trail, or the AZT for short.
Rick Deutsch, also known as “Mr. Half Dome,” has summited the iconic mountain 41 times and gives ambitious hikers all the information they need to tackle one of the most popular hikes in the country in a single day. Just hearing him talk about hiking Half Dome makes you want to drop everything, snag a permit, head to Yosemite, and try it for yourself:
The Half Dome hike is a first-class adventure. You’ll get a chance to get up close and personal with Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall, stroll through scenic Little Yosemite Valley, and view the crystal-clear Merced River. The long series of switchbacks on the way to the base of Half Dome are strenuous and will test your resolve to get to the top. Finally, there is the long pull up the cables, which is guaranteed to raise your heart rate. All of this will lead you to the climax: standing on the very top of Half Dome and gazing down nearly a mile onto the valley floor.
It’s always so much fun at these shows, that post-OR sadness is a real emotion felt around the office! Luckily, Winter OR is only a few short months away and we’ve already started planning more exciting author events! Hope to see you there!
